Introduction to ADME and Caco-2 assays
During the process of Drug Discovery, a particular compound must go through different tests to determinate whether this new entity will be efficient and safe for patients. Within this variety of tests, one key subgroup pretends to describe the compound’s interactions with physiology and its properties. ADMET, which stands for “absorption distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity” is a preclinical stage in which candidate compounds properties are assessed and their performance in front of different aspects of biological interactions are described.
This ADME segment is part of Preclinical Development. Preclinical studies include in vitro and in vivo testing, and it aims to determinate a new drug’s properties and effectiveness, before it is provided to hospitals for research in human beings (clinical trials). Preclinical studies were traditionally performed in animals (in vivo), but the use of in vitro testing is actually increasing, as they are less expensive and more practical, replacing and complementing in vivo approaches.
